MonStaff
MonStaff
Section titled “MonStaff”MonStaff is an open-source, self-hostable time-tracking and engineering analytics system centered on GitHub teams. It records time, activity, application usage and optional screenshots through a desktop client, then exposes organization administration and delivery analytics through a web dashboard.1
Original MonStaff code is licensed under AGPL-3.0-only. The local adoption does not itself publish the repository or replace previously distributed artifacts; see licensing for scope and release requirements.2
Repository
Section titled “Repository”The pnpm monorepo contains four applications and one shared package:
| Component | Technology | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Backend | Fastify 5, Prisma, PostgreSQL | REST API, auth, storage, GitHub sync, import and analytics |
| Desktop | Rust Core, Tauri 2, React, CLI | Timer, activity, screenshots, idle detection, agent telemetry, compliance, Local AI and updates |
| Admin | React 18, Vite, Chart.js | Organization settings, reports and delivery analytics |
| Website | Astro 5, Starlight | Public and engineering documentation projection |
| Shared | TypeScript, Zod | API schemas, types and constants |
See system architecture for the component map and getting started for local setup.
Product boundary
Section titled “Product boundary”MonStaff currently targets development teams using GitHub. It is not a general payroll, invoicing, workforce scheduling, GPS or geofencing platform. The comparison with Hubstaff is maintained in competitive landscape.
Maturity
Section titled “Maturity”The codebase has a sound modular foundation but requires security and reliability work before it should be treated as a mature multi-tenant system. The highest-priority concerns are tenant isolation, OAuth design, revocation, secret handling, durable background work and missing quality gates.3
Canonical knowledge
Section titled “Canonical knowledge”This wiki is the current source for product and engineering knowledge. Historical documents are retained under knowledge/raw/; plans live only in plans, and architectural choices live in the decision register.
